HISTORY

The Swedish Surfing Association (SSA), also known as “Svenska Surfförbundet”, was founded in 1985 to participate with a national team at the European Championship in Ireland.

The purpose of the SSA is to gather the surfers of the country for the development and interest of the sport as well as to maintain cooperation with the international surfing organizations in order to make it possible for Swedish surfers to train and compete internationally.

People have been surfing in Sweden since back in the 1970s but in the last decades the sport has become increasingly popular.

The first surfer to visit Sweden, however, arrived already in 1912 when Duke Kahanamoku – “the father of modern surfing” participated and won 100m freestyle swimming. During his visit he expressed that his favorite sport – surfing – one day should have Olympic status.
